A Suggestion was shown in START Gallery
at STRUTS artist run centre in 2000.
The installation included:
A) a series of fiber-based photographs with post-card markings etched on the backs through traditional print making processes. The images were distributed to people who were given 2 months to mail the photographs back... for the exhibition the mailed and written on post cards were places on chairs around the room.
B) One tape player for every image. The players were scattered on pedestals throughout the room. The audience controlled whether the players were on or off.
C) In each player there was a looped recording of three actors performing the text from one photo-post card. The actors each recorded their versions of the text alone in a studio without having seen or heard the text prior to performing it.
D) There were two suggestions stenciled on the gallery walls for the viewer/audience member:
1) Have a seat
2) Press play
